Al Shabaab fighters launched an assault overnight targeting an Ethiopian military base in Central Somalia’s Hiiraan province.

Militants reportedly unleashed a barrage of mortar rounds targeting contingents of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) stationed at a base in the town of Halgan.

Following the shelling smoke was spotted billowing over the town, according to local residents that spoke with Halgan Media on condition of anonymity. The casualties remain unclear at the moment.

The Al Aqaeda affiliated Militant group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement published on the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo, however the insurgents did not provide any further detail regarding the mortar attack.

Ethiopia maintains a large troop presence in neighboring Somalia under the guise of the US led war on terror, with tens of thousands of Ethiopian troops spread out across several provinces in southern and central Somalia.

The Ethiopian troops in Somalia, just like other allied Foreign forces occupying the country routinely come under attack from Al Shabaab in the war torn Horn of Africa nation.
