24 years later and Somalis still mourn the death of former president Mohamed Siad Barre. The former president of the Somali Republic perished in exile on this day in 1995.
Brigadier General Mohamed Siad Barre who seized power in a bloodless military coup in 1969 reigned power over the country til his ouster in 1991. Siad Barre originally born in the town of Shilaabo in the Ogaden region, was raised as an orphan prior to moving to the town of Luq in Somalia.
He built a strong relationship with his older brother, who motivated him to pursue a career in the military. The small orphan from Shilaabo would later come up in the ranks as Somalia’s highest ranking military official before seizing power at the age of 50 in bloodless coup overnight.
The honorable Jalle Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted from power on the 26th of January in 1991 by a coalition of rebel factions, which forced the late President to flee the country. He passed away four years later on the 2nd of January 1995 in Lagos, Nigeria but was layed to rest in his clan stronghold of Gedo province in southern Somalia.
One of the most painful statements the late president ever made goes as follows “ When i leave Somalia, i will leave behind buildings but not people”.
Three decades after his ousting from power and a quarter century following his death, Somalia still lays in ruins as the Somali nation still remains stateless. An ironically painful predication by the late President Mohamed Siad Barre.
