Al Shabaab fighters launched an assault overnight on a military base housing Foreign forces in the town of Haji Ali situated in the Middle Shabelle province of Somalia.
The insurgents reportedly attempted a ground assault on the compound and engaged in an intense fire fight with Burundian troops deployed at the base.
Large bursts of gunfire lasted for several minutes before a deafening silence took over the town. The casualties from last night’s encounter remains unknown.
The Al Aqaeda linked armed group Al Shabaab have claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement released online. The government of Burundi, whose troops where involved in the clashes is yet to address the attack.
Burundi has 5,000 troops deployed in Somalia fighting America’s war on terror and is one of the several nations that make up the UN backed AMISOM mandate.
