Federal police reportedly shot and killed two civilians overnight during clashes in Adis Ababa’s district 22 neighborhood. The clashes erupted late into the night when local authorities attempted to demolish an Orthodox Church.
The police where confronted by two youth who’ve been identified as ethnic Amhara. The youth where reportedly armed with batons and pieces of metal before police opened fire, killing both individuals instantly.
The Mayor of Addis Ababa – Takele Uma held a press conference the following morning. As he addressed the public Takele Uma confirmed the clashes and subsequent killings.
The mayor vehemently to investigate the matter. Following the press conference, Mayor Takele Uma reportedly visited the mothers of one of the victims.
Its still hasn’t been determined why authorities attempted to demolish an Orthodox Church in the middle of the night or if they even had legal grounds to so.
Ethnic and religious tension has been heightened in recent years as the country hits its pre balkans stage and with elections only 6 months away, the civil strife in the country is bound to escalate.
