The former rebel movement, Patriots Ginbot 7 officially ceased to exist as an individual movement after its congress decided to merge with other opposition groups at a venue that was held today in the Ethiopian capital.

The movement announced the dissolution on Tuesday saying it will merge with six opposition groups at the end of the week to form a “larger” opposition party.

Ginbot 7 was formed back in 2008 as a rebel movement and got its name after the date of the bloody 2005 elections. The Ginbot 7 rebel movement was based in Eritrea for the past decade and waged a low level insurgency against the Ethiopian regime, prior to striking a peace deal with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration in September 2018.
