A grenade attack targeted the home of a local district commissioner in the Somali capital Mogadishu late this evening.

Unknown assailants hurled a grenade at a home belonging to Dayniile district commissioner Mohamed Abuukar. The incident occurred in the cities Howlwadaag district.

The blast was followed by a heavy burst of gunfire as security forces opened fire in an attempt to repel the attackers. The culprits fled the scene moments after the grenade attack.

The Dayniile district commissioner Mohamed Abuukar resides in the Howlwadaag district due to safety concerns. The Dayniile district of Mogadishu is a hotbed for militant activity and rarely do government officials venture into the area.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The Al Aqaeda affiliated armed group Al Shabaab is known to carry out such attacks in the capital Mogadishu and elsewhere in the country.
