Thousands of ethnic Amhara’s hailing from the Abyssinian highlands took part in mass protests in Northern Ethiopia. The demonstrations took place across numerous towns, districts and cities on behalf of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Report by the Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA) revealed that brunt of the protests where in Dessie, Gondar, Debretabor, Meket, Kombolcha, Nefas Mewucha, Mekane Eyesus, Mekane Selam and Belesa.

The demonstrations where in response to what many Amhara’s considered interference and blatant attack on the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and it’s followers by the Federal Government and influential individuals from the rival Oromo ethnic group.

These latest street demonstrations that sweeped across northern Ethiopia came as a rival Orthodox Church Faction was formed in the Oromo region, angering many ethnic Amhara’s.

The Abyssinian patriarchs of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church condemned the new Orthodox Church faction in the Oromo region and accused radical ethnic nationalists from the Oromo region of waging war against the Church and trying to disemember one of Ethiopia’s most powerful non state institution.
