Intense clashes erupted late in the evening as Al Shabaab fighters attempted to storm the headquarters for Somalia’s Ministry of Defense in the capital Mogadishu.
A series of blasts believed to be result of hand grenades rocked the periphery of the compound. Armed militants subsequently besieged the compound sparking fierce clashes with government forces safeguard the facility.
According to local media reports, small arms fire was used by both sides in the the ensuing clashes. Smoke was spotted billowing over the skies following the attack. The casualties remain sketchy at the moment.
The federal government of Somalia has not addressed this latest Al Shabaab Attack targeting a key government branch. However, on the other end Al Shabaab have claimed responsibility via a statement published on the pro militant website Somali Memo.
