Violence in southern Ethiopia since June has forced more than 800,000 people to flee their homes and they need food and other aid, a report by the United Nations and the government said on Wednesday.

The intercommunal violence erupted in April between two ethnic groups in the Gedeo and West Guji areas around 400 km south of the capital. The Ethiopian government was unable for comment regarding this situation.

Ethiopia remains a melting pot for ethnic tension fueled by territorial disputes, cultural intolerance and marginalization of minority groups. Following an unprecedented level of protests which began in 2015, the situation in country has remained volatile.
