Al Shabaab insurgents carried out raids overnight targeting two separate Kenyan military bases in the Lower Jubba province of southern Somalia.
The first raid consisted of a ground assault targeting a Kenyan military base in the town of Taabto. Heavily armed Al Shabaab insurgents laid siege to the base and engaged Kenyan military at the periphery of the base, sparking fierce clashes between both sides.
Al Shabaab fighters launched a second attack last night on a separate Kenyan military base in the town of Kulbiyoow. The insurgents reportedly shelled the Kenyan military base, causing smoke to billow into the night sky. The casualties from that mortar attack remains unknown at the moment.
The Kenyan Defense Force (KDF) has not addressed the recent attacks last night on its military bases in Somalia. However the armed group Al Shabaab took credit for both attacks in a statement published online via the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo.
