A gruesome killing over the weekend has shocked the global Somali community. What’s believed to be a love affair gone wrong has led to a Somali refugee losing her life in the German city of Cloppenburg.

Local media reports from the Nierdersachsen region of Germany reveal a newly arrived Somali refugee was stabbed to death at her home Sunday morning. The culprit identified as none other than her husband.

The newly wed couple where only married for a month and a half. It’s not clear what led to the husband murdering his wife, however it’s believed the individual was under the influence while carrying out the gruesome murder.

It’s also been revealed the victims two year old son was in the presence of his mother when she was murdered. The victim, Leyla Sacid originally hailing from Somalia arrived in Germany last year with her son.

The individual who carried out the murder, her husband was denied asylum in Belgium in 2015 and later made his way to Germany, where he met Leyla. The couple where married for a mere six weeks ago prior to this weekend tragedy.

Domestic violence is rarely discussed within public discourse in Somali society. In many cases it’s even considered taboo to openly touch up on the topic. This culture of silence has cost the lives of countless Somalis at home and abroad, as seen with Leyla’s death over the weekend.
