Over 6,000 prisoners are expected to be released from various jails and detention centers throughout the country in the next coming days. Ethiopian state owned Media reported the detainees will be released from federal as well as regional custody.
The Federal Attorney General said 1,087 inmates will be granted pardon by the Federal Govt in connection with the Ethiopian Orthodox New Years, which is slated to begin the 12th of September.
The inmates that will be given pardon include 367 inmates from the notorious Kaliti, Ziway and Shewa Robit prison centers, according to Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye
In a related development, the Amhara regional state also granted pardon for 4, 329 prisoners, which include 90 women.
Similarly, the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Regional State (SNNPR) will be pardoning 2,366 inmates due to upcoming New Year celebrations in Ethiopia.
