Beledweyne (Halgan Media) – Al Shabaab fighters launched a series of attacks overnight targeting two separate Ethiopian military bases in central Somalia.

The insurgents launched simultaneous ground assaults targeting Ethiopian military contingents stationed at two separate military bases in the town of Halgan in Hiiraan province.

Local contacts based in the town of Halgan reveal the Al Shabaab fighters stormed both of the Ethiopian military bases from multiple directions, than layed siege, forcing the Ethiopian troops to be drawn into a face to face encounter with the insurgents.

Both sides engaged an intense barrage of gun fire, that lasted for several minutes before Ethiopian reinforcements began arriving at the periphery of both bases to prop up the ENDF contingents engaging the militants, sources reveal.

The casualties from both of the clashes that unfolded in the town of Halgan remains unknown at the moment.

However the Al Aqaeda affiliated armed group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attacks on both of the Ethiopian military bases in a statement published online.

The Ethiopian military maintains two separate military bases in the town of Halgan in Central Somalia. The Ethiopians maintain a separate military base in the nearby town of Maxaas.

Ethiopia has tens of thousands of troops deployed in neighboring Somalia under the guise of America’s war on terror.

The bulk of these troops, which mainly consist of Non AMISOM troops numbering well over 20,000 are occupying the following provinces of Bay, Bakool, Hiiraan, Gedo and Galgaduud.
