A member of the UN staff serving under the United Nations Mission to Somalia (UNSOM) was shot dead overnight by Al Shabaab assassins in the volatile Dharkeynleey district of Mogadishu.
The Al Aqaeda affiliated armed group Al Shabaab took credit for the assassination through a statement released on the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo, in which they stated a senior UN official was targeted during the late night hit.
Per Somali Memo – Al Shabaab gumen shot an killed Nadir Mohamed Khayre, a senior official that oversaw logistical operations for the UN Mission to Somalia (UNSOM).
Local residents in the Dharkeynleey district that spoke with Halgan Media reveal several shots where heard throughout the night. However it’s unclear who exactly was involved in the shooting.
The Dharkeynleey district in Mogadishu remains one of the most dangerous areas in the capital, with armed robberies and targeted killings being a near daily occurrence.
