The US military carried out a series of airstrikes targeting ISIS linked militants in the Puntland region of northern Somalia.

According to the press release from AFRICOM, The airstrikes took place in the village of Timirshe situated 150 kilometers southeast of the port city of Bosaaso.

The strike instantly killed 7 ISIS insurgents, which was followed by a joint ground raid targeting the village of Timirshe carried out by US special forces and allied Somali security forces, referred to as the PSF.

The latest round of US air strikes targeting the village of Timirshe comes just a day after PSF units encountered ISIS militants in a deadly clash leaving at least 20 dead.

In recent years the Puntland region of Somalia where the latest round of air strikes occurred has been overwhelmed by a growing insurgency led by ISIS linked militants.

The Somali faction of the Islamic State is mainly situated in Northern Somalia’s Bari province.

The terror group has carried out a series of attacks, that include ambushes and bombings targeting local security forces.

The militants are estimated to be numbering in the hundreds, with the bulk of there fighters based in mountainous regions of Bari province, which is adminstered by the Puntland regional state.
