Today the United States announced an additional $170 million in humanitarian assistance to support the people of Ethiopia, many of whom have been pushed from their homes by escalating conflict or natural disaster and who are facing severe food insecurity as a result.

An estimated 8.5 million people in Ethiopia are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. In recent months, the humanitarian situation has been compounded by insecurity and large-scale displacement along the border of Oromia and Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples regions with recent estimates identifying more than 800,000 displaced individuals along the West Guji and Gedeo zones alone.

The United States has been a crucial lifeline to Ethiopia in regards to contributing aid along with political support to the regime in Addis. This substantial amount of aide comes at a time in which Abiy Ahmed achieved peace with neighboring Eritrea as well ass securing ports in neighboring countries.
