The US embassy in Addis Ababa issued a travel advisory regarding the Somali state (Ogaden), which came as a surprise to many. The American embassy in Addis Ababa urged its citizens to not travel to the Somali region (Ogaden) by any means necessary.

Citing civil unrest, terrorism, kidnapping and even land mines in the Somali state (Ogaden). This ill advised and ill informed statement by the US angered many Somalis for obvious reasons. The Somali regional state (Ogaden) remains the most peaceful region within Ethiopia, while large parts of Ethiopia remain lawless and plagued by violence.

The federal govt of Ethiopia led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is yet to comment on the misinformed decision by the US embassy labeling Somali state (Ogaden) as a no go zone. The embassy went on to say “the Government of Ethiopia has restricted and shut down internet, cellular data, and phone services during and after civil unrest, which impedes the US embassy’s ability to communicate with its citizens”.

We will keep you updated with the latest developments from the region.
