In a huge rally held today in the northern enclave of Mekele in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. The chairman of the TPLF junta and President of the Tigray region by the name of Dr.Debretsion Gebremichael addressed thousands of supporters. In an unprecedented move in the midst of his speech Dr, Debretsion Gebremichael said “Either we live together in respect or disintegrate Ethiopia”.
Dr Debretsion Gebremichael was making a reference to article 39 of Ethiopia’s constitution which states any ethnic group can chooses to secede from Ethiopia if the overwhelming majority are in favor of it. Only a few media outlets outside Ethiopia got wind of the remarks ushering in from Mekele. The regime of Abiy Ahmed is yet to respond to the statement made by the chairman of the TPLF Junta.
Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) seized power in 1991 and ruled with an iron fist brutalizing millions of people living under Ethiopian colonial occupation for over a quarter century. There reign on power came to an end in early 2018 as a result of the Anti government protests and uprisings against the TPLF Junta which has been on going for three years.
The comments made by Dr Debretsion Gebremichael could be translated as a direct message to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s fragile government in the midst of a volatile transition period or a sign of whats to come in the near future. Time will tell if these fiery comments lead to any action.
