Unknown assailants hurled a hand grenade at a military camp housing Ethiopian troops in the volatile Oromo region. Ethiopian state media outlets report that the incident occurred mid afternoon in the town of Ginshi, situated in the Western Oromia region.

Two soldiers have been confirmed wounded in the explosion. The perpetrators that carried out the attack reportedly fled the scene. Ethiopian troops cordoned off the scene following the blast. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet.

This latest grenade attack targeting Ethiopian military personnel comes just 48 hours after a similar attack took place in the town of Ambo on sunday. Culprits reportedly hurled a hand grenade at a Pro Abiy Ahmed rally, leaving 29 people wounded.

The Western Oromia region has been plagued by a growing insurgency in recent months. The guerrilla waging in the region has seen both civilians and security suffer at the hands of insurgents and Ethiopia’s Army.

The insurgency came about as Militants from the breakaway rebel faction dubbed the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) began waging an armed campaign against Ethiopia’s federal government after the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) splintered into separate factions following the controversial peace agreement inked in Eritrea in late 2018.
