A nation wide internet black out is being reported across Ethiopia, in the wake of a brazen coup attempt over the weekend. Net Block (NB), which is an Internet Observatory reveals 97% of Ethiopia is currently without access to the internet.
The internet black out comes after a hectic 48 hours, in which nearly several high ranking officials where either killed or captured during a botched coup attempt. Many questions remain regarding the coup attempt. The Federal Government of Ethiopia led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the OPDO Junta have pinned the blame on a rogue General identified as Asaminew Tsige.
A shady character that spent 9 years in prison during the reign of Woyaane Regime. The Brigadier General Asaminew Tsige is considered a right wing figure and a former member of Patriotic Ginbot 7. An Amhara Rebel group formed in 2008, which waged a decade long armed struggle against the Woyaane regime.
The details of the alleged coup remain murky. The Federal Government of Ethiopia released there side of the story through various state owned media outlets yet subsequently shut down internet access in the country. Many observers believe the internet blackout is a clear sign that Ethiopia’s Government is trying to keep a lid on contradicting information from getting out, which might debunk the Government’s claims.
