Halgan Media correspondents based in Mogadishu reveal three fishermen vanished off the coast of Mogadishu late Thursday night. Local contacts reveal a group of fishermen sailed off into the sea near the abandoned lighthouse in Mogadishu’s Hamarweyne district.
Just a mere couple hours after sailing into the sea, the fishermen lost contact with there colleagues on land at the fish market in the Hamarweyne district. The following morning on Friday, fellow fishermen in Mogadishu launched a search and rescue mission but to no avail the fishermen could not be located. The cell phones of the missing fishermen where surprisingly off making it impossible to contact the group.
The rescue mission returned to Hamarweyne district demoralized and saddened by the latest development. As of now, the missing fishermen are missing and presumed dead. There whereabouts and well being remain unknown.
The family members of the missing fishermen arrived at the sea market in Mogadishu’s Hamarweyne district mid afternoon on Friday for any word on there missing loved ones. Upon receiving the news of the disappearance, one of the victims brothers broke down into tears. Local contacts at the Hamarweyne fish market where able to speak with one of the family members who was able to provide the names of the victims, which are listed below.

Family members and relatives of the victims that spoke with Halgan Media reveal they’ve contacted local authorities but where given the cold shoulder. Authorities in Mogadishu, weather at a federal or local level are yet to address the recent disappearance of the fishermen. Its widely believed by many local fishermen in Mogadishu that spoke with Halgan Media on the condition of anonymity that the Somali government is well aware of these reoccurring disappearances at sea but purposely choose to turn a blind eye.
This latest disturbing development of these missing fisherman comes a few weeks after two fishermen disappeared due to mysterious circumstances while at sea off the coast of Mogadishu in early January. One of those victims was a newlywed and had only been married for a mere two months prior to vanishing.
Fishermen in Somalia tend to face unprecedented levels of danger. On a yearly basis dozens of fishermen vanish without a trace off the Somali coastline.
