Insurgents from the Al Qaeda affiliated armed group Al Shabaab launched an assault overnight targeting an Ethiopian army base in southern Somalia.

The incident occurred in the Ethiopian occupied town of Bardheere in Gedo province.  Confirmed reports reaching the Halgan Media service desk reveal fierce clashes erupted when Militants attacked the Ethiopian army base located at the airstrip in Bardheere.

Local contacts reveal heavily armed militants engaged in a bitter firefight with Ethiopian troops in an attempt to storm the military base, the Ethiopian troops numbering in the hundreds where able to repel the militants. The casualties, if any from the gun battle are not clear at the moment.

Residents in the town of Bardheere reveal the Ethiopian troops began patrolling the town and its periphery last night shortly after the encounter. The movement of Ethiopian troops continued into this morning, with contingents of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) spotted doing foot patrols throughout the town.

The Ethiopian government has tens of thousands of troops deployed throughout southern and central Somalia. The bulk of these troops are based in the following provinces of Gedo, Bay, Bakool, Lower Jubba, Hiiraan and Galgaduud.

These troops which are seen as an occupying force by the vast majority of the civilian population maintain there presence in Somalia under the guise of the US led war on terror being waged in the country.
