Fahad Yassin, the chief of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has sacked the head of intelligence overseeing Mogadishu.

The dismissal came just days after the Halane compound in Mogadishu, which is equivalent to Baghdad’s greenzone was shelled with a barrage of mortar rounds.

The militant group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. This incident sparked the dismissal of Ibrahim Abdullah as the Mogadishu intel chief. The disgraced former intel chief was subsequently replaced by Isse Mohamed.

Sources in NISA that spoke with Halgan Media on condition of anonymity reveal the abrupt dismissal of Ibrahim Abdallah has sparked a rift within the intel apparatus.

NISA has been rocked by frequent changes in leadership since the Qatari backed Junta seized power in Mogadishu in early 2017. Dozens of NISA agents have been dismissed, many fled the organization due to Al Shabaab infiltration.

The firing of Ibrahim Abdallah is bound to sow further distrust within Somalia’s spy agency and only widen the discord within the fledgling spy agency according to sources.

NISA has been plagued by scrutiny following the appointment of Fahad Yassin as national intelligence chief. A controversial figure with ties to Qatari intelligence and jihadist groups throughout the Horn of Africa.
