A second case of COVID-19, commonly referred to as the Coronavirus has been confirmed in Somalia. An individual tested positive for the disease upon arriving in the capital Mogadishu according to state media.
Health Minister Fawzia Abiikar Nuur confirmed a second individual has tested positive for the disease while speaking live on air via Somali National Television (SNTV). The minister revealed the individual is an army commander for Somalia’s military and returned from Italy, which is the epicenter of the pandemic.
As a revealed during the televised broadcast the infected individual was in Italy completing military training, afterwards arrived in Mogadishu where he was quarantined on sight after testing positive for the illness. The identity of this individual has not been released and is reported to be under quarantine.
This latest development has sparked public backlash and anger within the global Somali community for obvious reasons. The spinelss and corrupt Somali government recently reversed there decision that banned international flights to and from the country, which has potential of dangering the lives of millions in an already war stricken nation.
Many Somalis also fear government officials and military personnel returning from abroad will spread the disease in the country, knowing most remain immune from Coronavirus check ups under the guise of diplomatic immunity.
