The chairman of the Ethiopian Democratic Union (EDU), Gebru Berehe was detained at the Bole International airport in Addis Ababa according to sources within the now defunct movement (EDU).

Members of the EDU have informed the Halgan Media service desk that chairman Gebru Berehe was on the verge of flying to Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region prior to being detained at the airport in Addis Ababa.

Following his arrest Mr Berehe was than whisked off to an undisclosed location. His current whereabouts and well being remain unknown at the moment according to sources with intricate knowledge on the matter.

The federal government of Ethiopia has still not addressed the illegal detainment of Gebru Berehe, with some of the Chairman’s staunchest supporters calling it an out right abduction.

It’s still not clear what led to the arrest of Gebru Berehe, however contacts within the EDU have revealed it may be linked to the governments vendetta against anyone affiliated with Ethiopia’s former ruling Junta (TPLF).

Chairman Berehe was confirmed to be heading to the city of Mekelle prior to being detained. The city of Mekelle is the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region and home to the former ruling junta (TPLF), which has adamantly opposed the premiership of Abiy Ahmed.

The links, if any between EDU chairman Gebru Berehe and authorities in the Tigray region remains unclear at the moment.

The Ethiopian Democratic Union (EDU) is one of Ethiopia’s oldest political parties and was originally founded in 1974 in response to the military coup by the fascist Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam.
