A series of attacks tonight rocked the Somali capital Mogadishu following numerous blasts and armed clashes in the conflict ridden city.
Suspected militants launched two separate attacks in the volatile Wardhighley district. Eyewitnesses reveal suspect Al Shabaab fighters armed with AK-47 assault rifles and RPG’s launched a brazen assault on an army checkpoint in the Ali Kamin neighborhood, sparking fierce clashes with government troops.
Security sources that spoke with Halgan Media on condition of anonymity confirm a similar attack in the Wardhighley district saw unknown assailants believed to be militants hurl a grenade at government forces, before fleeing the scene.
On a similar note, another blast took place in Mogadishu, this time in the Kaaraan district, when a convoy of government troops struck a roadside bomb while on patrol. A number of government troops are feared either dead or wounded.
Large blasts followed by gunfire where confirmed to have unfolded late tonight at the Arwo Itko junction, which divides the following districts of Howlwadaag and Wardhighley in Mogadishu.
Per sources, heavily armed gunmen travelling in a vehicle tried to speed through a police checkpoint and hurled a grenade at the police units, followed by fierce gunfire, as the police unit and the armed assailants exchanged gunfire.
The casualties, if any remains unknown for the time being. The vehicle involved in the shooting sped off following the encounter. Police reinforcements arrived at the checkpoint following the shootout.
No group has claimed responsibility for the numerous attacks in Mogadishu tonight. The Al Aqaeda linked militant group Al Shabaab is suspected of carrying out these attacks knowing the militants have been waging an armed campaign across Somalia for well over a decade.
The security situation of Mogadishu has been rapidly deteriorating over the past couple weeks, with nearly daily attacks on government troops and police units in the city and the surrounding area.
