A blast from a land mind left scores of children dead and wounded in the district of Wajid in Somalia’s Bakool province.

Local contacts reveal Ethiopian troops deployed in the area setup land mines in the neighborhood adjacent to the Military base in Wajid housing contingents of Ethiopia’s National Defense Force (ENDF).

A group of children numbering a total of five stumbled across the land mine that was dug on the side of a road. At least two children where killed in the blast. while three others where seriously wounded.

The three children wounded in the blast are currently languishing at a makeshift medical clinic in the town of Wajid according to local contacts in the area.

Ethiopian troops deployed in southern Somalia routinely plant land mines around there military bases and outposts in a bid to deter insurgent attacks. However in many cases as seen in the district of Wajid, many civilians end up being killed or maimed by those mines.

As of late 2018 Somalia was ranked with one of the most cases of unexploded ordinances and land mines on the African continent. This being a result of nearly three decades of conflict and consecutive foreign invasions sanctioned by the west.
