A laboratory that specializes in detecting COVID19, commonly referred to as the Coronavirus has been setup on the grounds of Jigjiga University in the Ogaden region.

State owned media outlets such Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) revelaed the new facility in Jigjiga could test up to 240 samples per day. Those samples ofcourse being suspected cases of the deadly coronavirus.

Ethiopia so far has 71 confirmed cases of COVID19, with two reported deaths. The president of the Somali region (Ogaden) Mustafa Omar was in attendance during the opening ceremony for the laboratory over the weekend.

The number of people infected with COVID19 in Ethiopia is expected to surge. The occupied State aka Ogaden faces the most danger, despite not having a single confirmed case of the coronavirus.

The region has a long history of being underdeveloped and in many cases heavily militarized. The health care system is non existent. Water and medicine shortages remain rampant in all eleven provinces of the Ogaden up until now.

Therefore an outbreak of the Coronavirus would have devastating effects on the region for obvious reasons. The Halgan Media service desk will keep you updated with the latest developments from the region.
