Ethiopia announced on Monday that it is closing universities and schools for two weeks, suspending sporting events including Ethiopian football matches, and cancelling all major meetings with a high number of participants.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed disclosed the decision from his office in a televised message.  It came in the wake of a rise in the number of COVID patients.

Authorities in Addis Ababa fear COVID, commonly referred to as the Coronavirus spreading throughout the country, which is home to over 100 million people. At least 5 individuals have tested positive for the disease within the span of a week.

Security and medical personnel remain on heightened alert across Ethiopia. Authorities in neighboring Kenya and Somalia have confirmed cases COVID within the territory they govern.
