A father and son both perished in a blast in the volatile Lower Shabelle province of Somalia. Local media reports reveal both victims where riding in a donkey cart and than ran over a landmine near the town of Bariire.
Both victims died instantly from the blast. The lifeless bodies where moved from the side of the dirt road by locals in the vicinity of the blast. Authorities overseeing the Lower Shabelle province are yet to comment on this gruesome incident.
The deaths of these family members caused by the landmine blast fall on the annual anniversary of “International Mine Awareness Day”, which has made the deaths more painful. Thousands of people die or get maimed from land mines and unexploded ordances in Somalia on a yearly basis.
The UN and its international partners have led initiatives in the past attempting to clear and remove land mines in Somalia. However these endeavors have failed on numerous as large swaths of territory in the country remain a no-go zone and under the control of the Al Qaeda affiliated armed group Al Shabaab.
