An upcoming gathering between regional state leaders and the Somali Government is expected to take place in the city of Dhusmareb in central Somalia.
The meeting between the rival camps is slated for Thursday July 9th. The Somali government and the regional states have been at logger heads for the past two years.
In the run up to the highly anticipated meeting, the Presidents of Somalia’s autonomous Jubaland and Puntland regional states have demanded the immediate removal of the Turkish trained Haramcad paramilitary units from the city of Dhusmareb.
Jubaland and Puntland leaders stress that these troops might be used for acts of violence and vowed to boycott the meeting in the city, if these troops are still present.
The Haramcad units, trained by Turkey are are routinely used by the Somali government to target rival factions and regional states in the country.
In recent months the Somali government has been under intense scrutiny from rights groups as a result of perpetuating rampant human rights abuses against civilians and political rivals alike.
