The fourth Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, has ended his exile in the United States and returned home after reconciliation with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The patriarch, who was replaced by Abune Paulos and forced into exile in 1991, has remained in exile in the US for nearly three decades following the ousting of Mengistu Haile Meriam from power.
The decision by the fourth patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tawahedo Chirch to cease his exile and return, came after a closed door meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in the US.
The Orthodox Church in Ethiopia is revered amongst the Amhara population, in which the church leads the community in many aspects in regards to social life and politics. The influence the Church wields in Ethiopia can not be underestimated, which could be a strong reason why Abiy Ahmed engaged the patriarch of the church, after nearly three decades in exile.
