Al Shabaab fighters launched a deadly assault on a Kenyan military base in the occupied NFD region, in the town of Yumbis.

Militants reportedly stormed the military base from multiple directions, sparking fierce clashes with contingents of the Kenyan Defense Force (KDF) stationed at the base.

Both sides exchanged an intense barrage of gunfire, which lasted several minutes. Once the gunfire ceased, the bodies of six Kenyan troops where spotted laying in a pool of blood as a result of the encounter with the insurgents.

Local sources reveal following the clashes, KDF reinforcements in route to Yumbis struck a roadside bomb, killing all personnel in the convoy instantly. The vehicle completely engulfed in flames, making it impossible to retrieve the remains.

The armed group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on the Kenyan troops in the occupied NFD region in a statement published on the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo.

The statement published on Somali Memo went further and vowed that Al Shabaab would continue waging there armed campaign in the region until they liberate the Kenyan occupied Somali territory known as the NFD region.
