A mid level commander of Somalia’s National Intelligence & Security Agency (NISA) was killed in an ambush late this evening. Sources that spoke with Halgan Media on condition of anonymity have identified the victim as Jibril Ahmed Tifow.
The ambush occurred on the volatile road linking the capital Mogadishu to the strategic district of Balcad in the neighboring Middle Shabelle province. NISA commander Jibril was traveling alone in his vehicle when he came under fire according to sources.
Militants, hailing from the Al Qaeda affiliated armed group Al Shabaab sprayed Jibril’s vehicle with bullets from all directions. NISA commander Jibril Ahmed Tifow died instantly from the hail of bullets.
The insurgents claimed responsibility for the ambush on the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo. However its not clear why a mid level NISA commander would be traveling alone, particularly late into the evening on the treacherous Mogadishu-Balcad road.
Halgan Media has reached out to security officials for comment but is yet to get a response. Somalia’s National Intelligence & Security Agency (NISA) has been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks.
An uptick in targeted killings on local officials and government employees has led to public backlash against the spy agency. Some even going as far as to accuse elements within the intelligence agency of collaborating with Al Shabaab.
