Three Al Shabaab militants escaped from a maximum security prison in Mogadishu, Somalia monday afternoon. The surprise prison break occurred at Mogadishu’s central prison.
Senior security officials within Somalia’s federal government confirmed the inmates escaped, but did not give further details. Per local media reports coming out of the capital, the three militants where serving lengthy sentences for various crimes prior to conducting a brazen prison break.
Late monday, news spread like fire regarding the escape of alleged militants from Mogadishu’s central prison. This only added more anxiety for local residents in Mogadishu following a deadly bombing which killed nearly 100 civilians, just two days prior in the capital.
Somalia federal government did not reveal the identities of the three militants that escaped custody but claimed several prison guards where detained for further questioning.
The Halgan Media service desk has been informed that a heavy police presence was spotted around the Mogadishu Central Prison and the surrounding areas following the prisoner escape, in particular the Mogadishu Seaport.
