The parliament in the autonomous Puntland regional state of Somalia held a session today addressing the controversial DP World-Bosaaso port deal.
The parliamentarians came to the decision that the Puntland minister of maritime transport and seaports must address the local parliament and explain the current economic situation of Bosaaso Port.
Its was in 2017, when Somalia’s autonomous Puntland state inked a controversial deal with the UAE based DP World company for 360 million US dollars, which in return gave the Emirates ownsership and management of the strategic port for 30 years.
Many of the local politicians and members of the business community view the DP World deal as being tantamount to exploitation by the Emirates, therefore raising many questions with both the public and parliament alike.
On top of the Bosaaso Port, the UAE owns a share of the port of Berbera in the pro Separatist controlled Somaliland region of northern Somalia.
