The road connecting the capital Addis Ababa to Ethiopia’s volatile Amhara region have been closed for the past 48 hours. This latest development ironically comes days after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was rewarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The road leading from Addis Ababa up north to Amhara region was closed after armed militias blocked off the main highway. Confirmed media reports surfacing from the region reveal civilian traffic and the movement of goods came to a standstill.
A report by the Bahar Dar based Amhara Mass Media Agency said the travel of people from the Amhara region to capital has led to movement being restricted for locals in the area.
The federal government of Ethiopia has yet to comment on this disturbing development. It’s still not clear what provoked the militias, who are said to be ethnic Oromo to block the main highway.
We will keep you updated with the latest developments from the region.
