The attack on the Elite Hotel in Mogadishu began Sunday afternoon after a car bomb exploded at the gates of the hotel, which is on Lido Beach, a popular beachfront and a symbol of the country’s resurgence from civil war.
The armed group Al Shabaab was formed as a result of tens of thousands of Ethiopian troops invading Somalia under the cover of US drones in late 2006, which sparked an unprecedented insurgency and gave birth to Al Aqaeda’s strongest ally in Africa.
