Several Somali youth where hospitalized over the past 24 hours in Minneapolis, Minnesota following drug overdoses. The victims are said to have no relation with one another.
The indivduals are said to consist of five men and two women and rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) on different occasions throughout the day.
One of the Somali youth that overdosed over the past 24 hours is confirmed to have died, while the remaining six are in a coma. At the moment, it’s not clear what drug these youth where abusing prior to overdosing.
Drug abuse has rocked the Somali community in the Minneapolis-St Paul area over the past couple years. Dozens of youth have died from overdoses, while countless more are suffering from addiction.
A report published by BBC Somali in October 2019 revealed at least 24 Somali youth died from drug overdoses in the state of Minnesota during that year (2019).
However the real number of fatalities from drug overdoses in Minnesota’s Somali community is believed to be much higher.
