Al Shabaab fighters and Ethiopian troops exchanged an intense barrage of mortar and artillery fire overnight in Somalia’s Bay province, according to reliable sources.
Sources reveal, the insurgents launched a barrage of Mortar shells targeting a Military base housing Ethiopian troops stationed in the district of Qansaxdheere. The Ethiopian troops occupying the district of Qansaxdheere responded by immediately firing a wave of artillery fire targeting the periphery of Qansaxdheere.
Screams where heard in the outlining towns and villages of Qansaxdheere as Ethiopian troops indiscriminately shelled densely populated civilian areas in response to the mortar attack carried out by the militants. However the casualties from the shelling remain unclear at the moment.
Sources informed Halgan Media that the Al Shabaab militants that carried out the shelling targeting Ethiopian troops in Qansaxdheere, launched there mortar attack from the vicinity of Makuudo, which is a town situated on the outskirts of the Qansaxdheere district.
Neither the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) or the Al Qaeda affiliated Militant group Al Shabaab have released a statement regarding the latest encounter that took place overnight.
The district of Qansaxdheere, situated in southwest Somalia hosts a large Ethiopian military base and is a major logistical hub for Ethiopian troops occupying southern and central Somalia.
The Ethiopian military maintains similar bases in the nearby districts of Bardaale and Baydhabo, which is home to tens of thousands of Ethiopian troops.
