The 8th of February remains a controversial date in the history books for the global Somali community. Exactly three years ago today, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo was elected president of war torn Somalia.

For a nation thats suffered from three decades of conflict and instability, the election of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo was welcomed with joy across the Somali peninsula and the diaspora.

Three years later and that hope turned into despair for obvious reasons. This article is not meant to detail Farmaajo’s failures and shortcomings nor his numerous acts of treason but the surprise move he pulled on the third anniversary of his election victory, which is today.

Farmaajo’s election victory was celebrated with high hopes due to the wide belief by the public that he was a nationalist and a Pan Somali icon. Ironically his true colors came out faster than anyone expected.

As we enter the third anniversary of his election, the president has taken an abrupt trip to the enemy stronghold aka Ethiopia. This latest move has sparked public backlash and scrutiny from wide segments of Somali society across the globe.

Ethiopia is a historical enemy of the Somali nation and has waged a relentless crusade against the Somali peninsula for centuries. Farmaajo who was viewed as an Anti Ethiopian unlike his predecessors has turned into a mere lackey of Abyssinia.

Instead of spending time at home with the public and addressing the nation, he was whisked away on Ethiopian airlines to enemy territory. A move that caught most Somalis by surprise and tainted what was left of Farmaajo’s credibility in the eyes of the public.

The damage to Farmaajo’s image is a self inflicted wound that he created on his own a long time ago but today’s stunt has put the nail on the coffin.
