The former commander of the South Eastern Division of the Ethiopian National Defense Force based in Harar, General Abraha Woldemariam passed away in Thailand where he traveled to for medical treatment a few months ago, BBC Amharic service reported.
General Woldemariam oversaw Ethiopian military operations in the Ogaden and was complicit in crimes against humanity and war crimes. Rights groups and International NGO’s have directly implicated Woldemariam in the past for committing Genocide in the Ogaden and leading Ethiopian Army massacres of civilians.
The brunt of the onslaught unleashed by General Woldemariam affected Pastoralists and civilians in the rural area. Entire towns and villages where raised to the ground while an entire region (Ogaden) was turned into an open prison.
Any form of sickness affecting General Woldemariam was unknown until the now. The tyrant kept a low profile, following the removal of the TPLF Junta from power. Many officials within the TPLF/EPRDF committed unimaginable atrocities against Somalis in the Ogaden. The death of General Woldemariam remains bittersweet in the eyes of many.
We will keep you updated with the latest developments from the region.
