A prominent member of the TPLF executive committee was sacked from her ministerial post in Ethiopia’s federal government. According to a report published by the Ethiopian tabloid dubbed Addis Standard the dismissal of Fetlework Gebregziabher as the Minister of Trade came out today.
Fetlework Gebregziabher was veteran member of TPLF and the front’s deputy chairperson. She was originally appointed to the ministry of trade in October 2018 before being abruptly fired and replaced early Wednesday morning.
The dismissal of Gebregziaber is viewed as many as a sign of the growing rift between the former TPLF junta and Abiy Ahmed’s ruling OPDO which has been in power since early 2018. As of now, the TPLF is yet to respond to the dismissal of one of there top cadres but it’s widely believed the former ruling junta won’t take these latest developments lightly.
With election season around the corner, the animosity between rival political factions and the country’s fragile security situation can easily unravel a Pandora’s box that nobody is ready for. Ethiopia has been plagued by ethnic conflict and lawlessness for the past couple years, which nearly put the nation on the brink.
The response of the TPLF still remains unknown but the chess game being played by Abiy Ahmed might turn into Russian roulette if he’s not careful. Only time will tell what these new developments lead to.
We will keep you updated with the latest developments from the region.
