Following a two day gathering in Ethiopia’s Tigray enclave, representatives of the Tigray regional state and the former rebel junta Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) wrapped up there conference in the city of Mekelle.

The conference held in Mekelle was to decide on weather to merge with prime minister Abiy Ahmed’s newly formed coalition dubbed the Ethiopian Prosperity Party but as expected, the ex rebel junta announced they will not merge with EPP.

The decision to reject the merger was made by the executive and central committee of the TPLF on the grounds that it did not align with the objectives and ideology set fourth in Ethiopia’s current constitution.

The TPLF also stated that the ambitions of the prime minister’s EPP coalition poses a risk to the Tigray nation and there regional autonomy.

Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) overthrew the Marxist Government of Ethiopia after a bitter insurgency, in which they seized power in 1991 and ruled the nation with an iron fist for 27 years.

The TPLF where ousted from power in 2018 after a three year long wave of anti government protests nearly brought Ethiopia to its knees. The appointment of Abiy Ahmed as prime minister in March 2018 led to immediate tension with the former ruling junta (TPLF).

Thus far, prime minister Abiy Ahmed has failed to impose his mandate and authority over the restive Tigray region. The latest move by the TPLF to out right turn down the prospects to merge with his unitary coalition dubbed EPP is another obstacle for  the prime minister as he attempts to assert his power in the country, in the run up to national elections later this year.

We will keep you updated with the latest developments from the region.
