Gaalkacyo (Halgan Media) – Nearly a dozen vehicles containing contraband where seized by security forces in the city of Gaalkacyo in central Somalia.

Police units under the command of the Galmudug regional state carried out raids in South Gaalkacyo and seized at least 10 truckloads of charcoal. The drivers of the vehicles where detained and subsequently jailed according to the Galmudug police commissioner Qaasim Shirdoon Cali.

The police commissioner went further and vowed to crackdown on those engaged in the illicit charcoal trade and reiterated how any activities related to the sale, distribution or export of charcoal is illegal in the territory under the Galmudug regional state.

On a similar note, the governor of Mudug province from the Galmudug state, Cabdirahman Cali Diriye congratulated the police units on a job well done and stated his administration will do everything in its power to thwart the illicit charcoal trade in the region.

The illicit charcoal trade is a lucrative business in Somalia but poses extreme environmental risks to the country and population. In recent years, many of the autonomous regional states in Somalia have passed numerous decrees outlawing the trade.
