Unknown gunmen opened fire on a group of civilians in the town of Gewane in the Afar region of Ethiopia. Three people died at the scene as a result of being struck by a hail of bullets Halgan Media reports.

The victims where said to be traveling in a vehicle at the time of the incident when armed assailants opened fire on civilians unprovoked. It’s still not clear on what led up to the shooting. The Southern portion of the Afar Regional State of Ethiopia has been a volatile hotbed in recent months.

In late April a similar incident occurred when a group of footballers where ambushed in the same area, which killed one person and wounded several others. Tit for tat skirmishes and clashes have also been reported in the area between rogue militias and paramilitaries.
