US AFRICOM, which oversees US military operations in Africa has conducted another deadly drone strike in Somalia.
A statement published online at 13:00 by US AFRICOM revealed US predator drones launched strikes targeting the Al Shabaab controlled town of Sakoow in Somalia’s Jubada Dhexe province.
The statement went further alleging two militants where killed in the strike, with a third one wounded. The identity of these victims has still not been independently confirmed.
In Somalia it remains impossible for local journalists or aid agencies to access Al Shabaab controlled areas of the country, making it to difficult to assess the aftermath of the drone strike.
The drone strike targeting the town of Sakoow is the third US drone strike in Somalia within the span of a week. The uptick in drone strikes plaguing Somalia in recent weeks is unprecedented.
The US has carried a total of 13 drone strikes in Somalia so far this year and barely 7 weeks into the year. A clear sign that drone war is bound to surpass its record number of strikes as scene in previous years.
