Veteran Somali journalist and former Radio Mogadishu reporter Sheikh Abdullahi Ali (Afrax Yare) passed away on Monday night in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Afrax Yare who’d been severely sick over the past few weeks and fighting a number of illnesses has past away at his family’s residency in Mogadishu, Somalia at the age of 67.

Born in 1953 he completed his education at Somali National University in Mogadishu and later joined the ranks of Radio Mogadishu at the age of 27 in 1980, which he worked until the fall of the Siad Barre government in 1991.

Following the collapse of the Somali government and devastating civil war that followed, Afrax Yare choose to stay behind in Somalia and did work on the ground with the BBC Somali.

He’ll be rembembered as one of the most prolific journalists in Somali history and up there in the ranks with big names such Caawke and Cawil Dahir.
