Gaalkacyo (Halgan Media) – Hassan Abshir Farah, the former mayor of Mogadishu, that also served as Prime Minster of Somalia is expected to be layed to rest later today in the city of Garowe in Somalia’s Nugaal province.

Hassan Abshir was one of the most prolific names in Somalia’s political elite. Hasaan served as the Mayor of Mogadishu during the Siad Barre era.

He reappeared in Somalia’s political scene at the Carta conference in 2000 and was than elected as prime mininster of the first post 1991 government in Somalia, serving as prime minister of the Transitional National Government (TNG) under president Abdiqasin Salad Hassan.

However his tenure as prime minister didn’t last long. He was sacked from his post a year later (2001) after falling out with the president and replaced with Ali Khalif Khayr.

Following his dismissal from the Transitional National Government (TNG) Hassan Abshir became the interior minister for Somalia’s autonomous Puntland regional state between 2001 and 2003.

Just a few years later he was appointed as a personal adviser to Abdullahi Yusuf, the former president of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) before falling out with the than prime minister Ali Mohamed Geedi.

in 2009 Hassan Abshir ran for president of Somalia’s autonomous Puntland regional state but loss to Abdirahman Faroole, A Somali-Australian businessman from the diaspora.

However Hassan Abshir was elected as an MP in the Federal parliament in Somalia in 2012 in which he served as an MP until 2016.

After the end of his reign as an parliamentarian, Hassan Abshir was mainly out of the Somali political spectrum but would routinely appear on Somali media outlets over the years commenting on political developments in Somalia.

Hassan Abshir passed away this past weekend after a long battle with cancer while seeking medical treatment in Turkey according to family members.

Following his death on Sunday, his body was immediately flown to Somalia and is expected to be buried today Wednesday July 15th in the city of Garowe.
