A massive barrage of mortar rounds rained down on multiple districts across Mogadishu, Somalia within the past hour, with the brunt of the shells landing on the grounds of the presidential palace.
Around 8:25pm local time, a wave of of shelling engulfed the night sky as mortar rounds where landing in the bustling districts of Hamarweyne, Wardhigleey, Shangaani and Hamar-Jajab. These shells are said to have landed in densely populated civilian areas according to local residents.
However an even more intense wave of shelling was aimed at Somalia’s presidential estate, with shells landing on the grounds of the fortified presidential palace. The Somali government is yet to address the shelling targeting Villa Somalia.
The Militant group Al Shabaab took immediate responsibility for the attack via the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo. The intense wave of shelling targeting Mogadishu tonight, comes a day after five people where killed in a suicide bombing.
